About Magwick™
About The Inventor
Paul Cusick
Magwick was developed by Paul Cusick, a UK-based innovator. A retired Chartered Civil Engineer by profession, Paul also has professional experience in UAV Technology and Audio Engineering.
In 2020, during lock down, he opted for a career change and opened I Love Zero, an Award winning zero waste shop, with his wife Theresa.
For their shop they created their own brand of candles. Frustrated by the single-use nature of container candles, he set out to create a system that made vessels genuinely reusable. The result is Magwick is protected by patent applications and is now available for global licensing.

The Problem Magwick Solves
The Problem Magwick Solves
Candle jars manufactured for container candles are a global phenomenon, cherished for their aesthetic and sustainability appeal. Yet the industry has a hidden problem; adhesive dependency. Traditional wick fixation relies on pressure-sensitive adhesive pads (commonly called “stickies”) applied to the vessel base, securing the steel wick support during manufacture and burning. But adhesive has limitations:
-
Heat degradation: Molten wax and prolonged burning can soften adhesive bonds, causing wicks to drift and creating safety risks like uneven flames, secondary ignition, or escape from the vessel.
-
Single-use waste: Once the candle burns down, sticky residue makes vessels unsuitable for reuse or refill, contributing to the 35 million candle jars sent to UK landfill annually, with only 8% ever recycled. That's over 600 million candle vessels worldwide every year.
-
Manufacturing fragility: Adhesive application is operator‑dependent; inconsistent placement can lead to rejects, rework, and quality variability. While temporary magnetic jigs exist for wick placement during pouring, Magwick’s magnetic retention is designed to maintain alignment during use and to support refill workflows, a combined manufacturing and in‑use benefit that adhesive‑based approaches may not consistently deliver.
The Magwick Solution
Magwick replaces adhesive with patented magnetic wick retention; a breakthrough that transforms how container candles are made, used, and recycled.
How it works: A magnetic element, integrated into or positioned beneath the vessel base, magnetically couples with a steel wick support tab. With refill candles this magnetic coupling holds the wick support in precise alignment throughout burning, and normal handling. The wick remains centered, stable, and safe (even through 1-metre impact scenarios).
When the candle wax is complete finished burning, the wick support simply lifts out, leaving no adhesive residue.
Key Advantages
-
Superior retention: Magnetic forces remain stable across molten-wax temperatures where adhesive weakens; supporting consistent flame height and impact safety.
-
Reusable vessels: Adhesive-free design makes cleaning effortless; candle jars are ready for wax refill kits, subscription programs, or consumer DIY refills, extending product lifespan of the jar and dramatically reducing waste.
-
Manufacturing reliability: Unlike operator-dependent adhesive placement, Magwick’s magnetic coupling is inherently repeatable and requires no skilled application, simply drop the wick support into the vessel, and the magnetic field automatically maintains alignment. This eliminates production rejections, rework costs, and quality variability at the manufacturing stage, while simultaneously providing the stable wick positioning that matters most: maintaining consistent flame height and safety throughout the candle’s burn life.
-
Circular economy enabler: Licensees can market refillable candle collections, turning one-time customers into loyalty program participants and commanding premium margins.
The Patent
Patent status: Magwick is protected by pending patent applications covering magnetic wick retention for container candles, including embodiments with magnetic elements integrated in or adjacent to the vessel base and in external supports. Application details and claim charts are available under NDA.
Brand Assurance
Magwick™ identifies our patented magnetic wick retention technology used under licence on approved products. Magwick Inside™ indicates the technology is embedded in the product and used in accordance with our quality standards and brand‑use guidelines. Look for these marks on packaging and product pages to identify approved implementations. Use of these marks is authorised by Magwick under programme rules; detailed technical criteria and tests are provided to licensees under NDA.
Why Now?
-
Consumer demand: The home fragrance and candle market is growing at double-digit rates; consumers increasingly seek sustainable, reusable products and are willing to pay for them.
-
Regulatory trends: UK and EU packaging regulations are pushing toward circular economy principles; reusable vessels align with corporate sustainability goals and upcoming Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) schemes.
-
Manufacturing edge: Licensees adopting Magwick immediately differentiate from single-use competitors and reduce quality-control costs associated with adhesive fixation.
For Licensees
We offer patent licenses to candle jar manufacturers, container candle makers, ingredient suppliers, and retail brands. Licensees gain access to Magwick technology, technical guidance on integration, and marketing support to establish refillable candle programs. Our joint comprehensive QA protocols ensure compliance with safety standards; full responsibility for manufacturing, labeling, and market compliance rests with the licensee.
Our Commitment
Magwick was designed with a singular goal: to make candle jars genuinely sustainable. We believe the future of the candle industry lies in reuse, and we’re committed to helping all manufacturers, big and small, lead that transformation.
